Academic Overview

Macquarie University is a beautiful, green campus set among rolling hills in North Ryde, which is 12 miles north of Sydney.  In fact, Macquarie was named the third "greenest" university in Australia by The Australian!  They have an active student union that sponsors sports and clubs, as well as dances, concerts and special events, as well as excellent athletic facilities, including courts, playing fields, a gym and recreation hall.  The Macquarie Shopping Centre is located nearby and offers a range of shops, restaurants, a movie cinema and an ice rink.

Students on this program will enroll in four courses at Macquarie University.  (See Four Course Policy information below.)  Students will be fully integrated into the Australian academic system and take courses alongside Australian students and other international students.  Past students have enjoyed courses related to Australian culture, politics and society, but some Business and Science courses are also available.  Please review the "Course Restriction" page of IFSA-Butler's website before applying to this program.

SJU Four Course Policy
It is understood that Saint Joseph's students who participate on the IFSA-Butler: Macquarie University program are only permitted to take four, 4-credit courses abroad, but will only receive three SJU credits per course.  Due to the fact that this may impact a student’s graduation course requirements, Saint Joseph's University will waive one free elective for the student upon their return, provided they meet the following conditions:
  1. The student must have one free elective remaining over and above the ones taken with the study abroad program.
  2. The student will still have at least 120 credits at time of graduation.
  3. The student MUST remain enrolled as a full-time student according to the study abroad program’s requirements.
  4. The student is obliged to successfully complete all coursework on the study abroad program and pass each of the four courses taken abroad.
Students participating on this program will be required to sign a Four Course Policy Form at the time of application.  If you do not have a free elective available to waive, please contact the Study Abroad Advisor to discuss your options.

Co-curricular/Internship Opportunity

Macquarie University offers an opportunity for students to participate in courses with a community focus through the Participation and Community Engagement program (PACE). Selected Macquarie University courses enable students to work with partner organizations in a range of workplace activities such as:

Internships
Practicum
Field trips with a partnership component
Community service and learning
Community development and/or research projects

PACE courses are typically worth 3 U.S. semester credit hours. They are highly competitive, and registration for the PACE courses does not occur until arrival in Australia. Applicants should note that some PACE courses will require an in-person formal interview upon arrival.  Examples of past placements and student testimonials can be viewed on the PACE website.

Students interested in taking a PACE course abroad should talk to a CIP advisor and their academic advisor prior to beginning an application for the program.  As with all study abroad courses, PACE courses will need to be pre-approved for SJU credit (per the normal course approval process).

Spring 2016 Participant
Macquarie University has a beautiful campus and professors who are willing to help in any way possible! The program location is about an easy, hour ride into the city of Sydney which is beautiful. On campus housing is unique in that it is coed and is filled with aussies as well as other international students.

Erin E. Clark, Fall 2015 Participant
The Macquarie University Program gave me the opportunity to be immersed in the Australian learning culture allowing me to develop relationships with people from all over the world. I not only grew academically, but personally as well. I was opened to new cultures, traditions and ways of thinking. These past four and a half months have been the greatest in my life so far. This program allowed me to grow into an adult by pushing me to think in new ways and develop my own ideas and opinions.
