Program Description:

Charles F. Shreiner '50 Scholarship for Study in Latin America
Academic Year 2018-2019

The Charles F. Shreiner '50 Fund for Latin American Studies is the gift of several generous alumni of Latin American Studies at Saint Joseph's University.  Thanks to this endowment, the Latin American Studies Program can now offer multiple partial scholarships of to SJU students to support study in Latin America. This might be in the form of a study tour offered by SJU, semester abroad, or internship abroad.  Preference will given to SJU study tours to Latin America that are approved Latin American Studies courses. If awarded, the scholarship will be credited to a student’s SJU tuition account.

To be eligible, a student must have already taken or be currently enrolled in one or more Latin American Studies courses at Saint Joseph’s. This course can be in any of the supporting disciplines (including SPA 202, 301 and 303). Applications will be evaluated by a committee organized by the Center for International Programs on the basis of financial need, the merits of the study abroad proposal, performance in Latin American Studies courses, and plan for future study or work related to the region. All Saint Joseph's University students, regardless of major are invited to apply, though preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need and who have declared a minor in Latin American Studies.  Award winners will be asked to provide brief descriptions and photos of their experiences to share with future students and alumni. This award is contingent upon students completing the overseas study abroad program. All award decisions are final and may not be appealed. SJU reserves the right to amend or rescind the award. 

Application Requirements

The application consists of two parts:
  • the application form
  • a one-page proposal for the study abroad experience.
The proposal should address the following:
  • Describe the program or scholarly activity that you will complete.
  • Explain how your academic work or relevant experience has prepared you for the proposed experience abroad.
  • Discuss how the experience abroad will enhance your academic and/or professional future
  • Describe clearly your need for financial support in order to participate in the course or program.  In addition to any other information that you consider relevant, please respond to the following questions:
  • Do you receive a federal Pell grant to help finance your education?
  • Do you participate in the Federal Work Study Program?
  • Do you have some other form of employment to help cover the cost of your college education?
Application Deadline

Applications must be submitted by March 15th 11:59PM. Late applicants will not be considered. 
Notification of Award
The scholarship committee will meet after the application deadlines to review completed grant applications which meet the criteria outlined above. Students will be notified of their status by approximately late November/early December. The award will be credited toward's students SJU tuition account.

 *This application cycle will only accept applications for students participating in Fall 2018 semester abroad or an SJU Study Tour.
